Tuesday August 8, 2006: The 2006 Party Monarch, Claudette “CP” Peters, have been hospitalised, but there is a chance that she would be able to hit the road for Carnival last lap today. ><> Queen Ivena reportedly fell ill backstage Sunday evening, before she was able to perform in the 2006 Calypso Monarch competition. The medical attention that she got, apparently affected the calibre of her performance. ><> The 2006 Calypso Monarch of Antigua, Edimelo, have said that it was a rough time coming through the quarter final, as well as the semi final rounds of the competition, but he was able to pull through with much success. He said that while last year he had winning on his mind, this year his focus in the finals was to go out on the stage and have a good time. It was his 28th year in the music industry in Antigua, 4 of which saw him into the calypso finals. ><> Inconsistency took the spotlight from the reigning calypso monarch, Edimelo, who moments apart in two interviews after winning the competition, said that next year would be his last, while on the other hand, said that he would need some time, maybe days, weeks, months and even a year to decide his future in the calypso business. He said that he would also try to be his best, to be a good ambassador for Antigua. ><> Edimelo and Singing Althea, are to represent Antigua in the Leeward Islands Calypso Competition. Queen Ivena is the defending champion. ><> The first round of meetings with the attorney general, Justin Simon, got underway in London yesterday. Simon met with an arbitrary specialist, in order to help map out the government’s plan, in response to the $49 million claim being pursued by the Malaysian investor, Dato Tan Kay Hock, who was said to be the owner of all of the lands at Guiana Island. ><> A kaleidoscope of colours from the groups, troupes and other participants for Carnival 2006, donned the streets of St. John’s yesterday, making their way to carnival City to be judged. ><> A parade of all of the participants in the 2006 Carnival festival, was due to move off from the Multipurpose Centre at Perry Bay, through the streets of St. John’s, to Carnival City, where all of the winners would be announced. ><> (More to follow.) ><>

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE CARNIVAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE (CDC)

CDC "Clean Venue' Policy - URGENT

For Immediate Release:

Saturday 05th August, 2006: The Carnival Development Committee (CDC) would like to remind the general public that Carnival and its events are successful because of the support of Sponors.  Hence it is the CDC’s obligation to ensure that they receive maximum benefit for their support.

The Carnival Development Committee forbids any promotional communication or commercial messages from competing brands on the grounds of Carnival City and in any areas visible to television viewers or object of filming by TV cameras.

In the same way, CDC reminds patrons and participants that the clothing worn by the participants and patrons on the grounds shall not bear the trademark, slogan or logo of ANY competing brands.

The Carnival is Antigua & Barbuda’s greatest entertainment event and it is only by establishing protection of our sponsors that we can maintain the events’ unique characteristic.

Please be guided accordingly (End)

PRESS RELEASE FROM CABLE & WIRELESS

04th August, 2006........Cable & Wireless a Diamond Sponsor of Antigua's Carnival 2006 is unsatisfied with the way in which the Carnival Development Committee has treated its contractual obligations with Cable & Wireless West Indies Ltd. Cable & Wireless considers that the CDC has treated its obligations in a manner which is contrary to the expectations and intentions that underpin its contract with Cable & Wireless.

Whereas the contract speaks specifically to protecting the sponsorship rights of Cable & Wireless, we are concerned with the arbitrary and capricious behaviour which has surfaced this year pursuant to which Cable & Wireless' sponsorship rights have been breached by the CDC for the benefit of a competitor.

Cable has over the years demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the development and enhancement of culture. This year 2006 has been no different. For over a decade, we have been a major sponsor to Antigua 's Carnival.  Our sponsorship of Carnival includes bmobile Party Monarch Show, bmobile Children's Carnival and the Cable & Wireless Hellsgate Steel Orchestra - 2006 Panorama Champions.

It is in these circumstances that Cable & Wireless wishes to record its utter disappointment at the removal of its signage from within the Antigua Recreation Grounds for the event that is scheduled for August 4, 2006. This entitlement is specifically granted under the contract with the CDC.

Cable & Wireless is committed to the development of the greatest Summer Festival and looks forward to partnering with the CDC for Carnival 2007. (End)

Tuesday August 1, 2006: A new female calypso queen has been crowned. She is Singing Althea. Althea won the crown from a field of 9 competitors, who participated in that encounter last night, as part of the 2006 Carnival programme. In the keenly contested event, the reigning queen for the last 5 consecutive years, Queen Ivena, came first runner-up, while Lady Cute was cute enough to carry the second runner-up position. It was the first time since 1995, that Singing Althea had taken a crown in the calypso arena. The main prize of the competition was a motorcar. ><> Tropical weather conditions are hovering over Antigua & Barbuda, as Tropical Storm Chris passes. ><> The leader of the Antigua Labour Party (ALP), Lester Bird, has supported the call, that campaign financing should be legislated. But while the suggestion had come from one of his comrades, Gaston Browne, MP, Bird is not happy that he had been beaten to the draw. Bird said that the charge should be led by the political party and more so, that it should take the form of a bi-partisan bill. Bird was also quick to react, to criticisms, concerning when he was seated in the position of Prime Minister of Antigua & Barbuda, but said that he would not be entertaining any of those discussions at this time. He said however, that such a bill should be a bi-partisan one. Bird was also quick to remind all and sundry, that the ALP was the fundamental body to formulate the policies of its members in Parliament and not the elected Parliamentarians. He said that he was prepared also, to make a public statement on that issue. The former PM also said, that it was up to the sitting PM, Baldwin Spencer, to move that process forward. Bird did not comment on the timeframe that Browne had ultimately sent to the Spencer administration. ><> The sitting MP for City West, Gaston Browne, who have put the UPP administration on notice about legislating campaign financing reform, have rebuffed suggestions by his leader Lester Bird, stating that there was no promise for any member of the House of Representatives, to table a bill on behalf of the ALP. ><> The new chairman of the Antigua Port Authority, Walter Armstrong, has indicated his confidence in carrying out his duties, ahead of his first meeting. ><> ICC officials have tested the pitches at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium. ><> The Stanford 20/20 tournament faces possible reprisals, after concerns have been raised by a group, who said that the Jamaican artiste who was responsible for the theme song, Beenie Man, was a gay and homosexual rapist. ><> (More to follow.) ><>

Monday July 31, 2006: Revelers take home the Junior Band of the Year title at yesterday’s Junior Carnival. The event was witnessed by a good amount of spectators, largely made up of children. It preceded a parade led by the optimist contestants, which left the Parliament grounds, on to the Queen Elizabeth Highway, then to Independence Drive and into Carnival City. The colourful displays gave the public a taste of what was in store for Carnival 2006. In the private bands category, Revelers beat Dynamics into second place, while Ali & Associates came third. As for the Prince & Prince events, the lone contender for Prince was from the Silk Dust Mas Troupe, who easily took the main prize. As for the princesses, Ali & Associate pulled it off in the number one slot, followed by People of Different Places Mas and Carnival Time Mas Troupe into second and third places respectively. In the Junior Calypso Competition, held later in the evening, Golden Holly found a way to celebrate her final year in the 5 to 12 category, by out-singing and out-performing seven other competitors. The Mighty Hawk in second place and last year’s winner, A ‘Shante’, settling for third this time around, followed her. In the 13 to 19 categories, last year’s winner, De Lyricksman, maintained his feat by out manoeuvring the other 6 contenders in that division. Singing Nita in second place and The Mighty Star in third followed him respectively. ><> The City West and ALP MP Gaston Browne, have put the UPP administration on notice, that if it does not legislate campaign financing by the end of this year, he would model a private bill on the subject and take it to Parliament in January of next year. ><> MP Browne said that in hindsight, the substantial amount of money that he received from R. Allen Stanford, leading up to the last general elections, have been unfair. ><> Emergency crews were kept busy yesterday after a lone female driver, were unable to control her vehicle and ran off Factory Road. Last night, in the vicinity of Big Creek, a jeep overturned, after colliding with a car. Both the driver of the jeep and the female driver of the other accident had to be freed by the ‘Jaws of Life’. ><> The police and the government have reached a pay agreement. ><> Female calypsonians battle on stage this evening. ><> Resort make linen donation to the mental home. ><> The organiser of the local Miss Universe Pageant delegate, Calvin Southwell, have characterised the help received from the Antigua & Barbuda government and the general public as disappointing. ><> The country’s Technical Director of football, Dr. Victor Stanculescu, has resigned. The president of the local football association, Mervyn Richards, is to make an announcement on the subject today. ><> Karl James takes the bronze medal at the 20th Central American and Caribbean Games in Cartagena, Colombia. ><> (More to follow.) ><>

Saturday April 8, 2006: Three men were taken into police custody yesterday afternoon. Of the three, two were former employees of the state-owned ABS Radio and Television systems, while the third, which operated an advertising company, had traded directly with the entity. But as the news broke, the identity of the three was disclosed. Interrogated separately and simultaneously for the weekend were James “Tanny” Rose, the former Director-General of ABS, Mark Bowers, a former general manager of ABS and Robert “Bobby” Reis, head on Sun Images. Rose was the subject of a similar exercise on March 28th, where the police had conducted an early morning raid on his home and carted away tapes and documents. His son, who was at home at the time and who is currently a cameraman at ABS television, was also taken into custody, but was released shortly thereafter. Unconfirmed reports had suggested that the three men were featured heavily in a 2004 report, which had investigated revenue collection and disbursements, particularly in the area of advertising and trading. Apart from the allegations of fraud, the methods practiced, were apparently conducted in an unauthorised manner. It could not be confirmed either, if all three had colluded in part or on a whole in that area of the operations. A police source has confirmed, that Rose was being held at Police Headquarters on the American Road, while Bowers and Reis, although not making contact, were being accommodated at the St. John’s Police Station. Law practitioners have confirmed, that according to the laws of the country, an individual can be detained for questioning, for up to 48 hours before being released. It was also noted, that Saturdays and Sundays, were not included in the count. The interrogation of the three, were said to be ongoing. ><> Loyal supporters of the Antigua Labour Party (ALP), camped out in a vigil outside of Police Headquarters overnight. The group had assembled earlier in the afternoon, when it was known, that political activist James “Tanny” Rose, was back again in police custody. Rose was among three persons, who were identified as special detained guests, of the Royal Police Force of Antigua & Barbuda. The other two were Mark Bowers, a former general manager of ABS Radio and Television and Robert “Bobby” Reis, the head on Sun Images Limited. Later in the afternoon, the party spokesperson, Lionel “Max” Hurst, had confirmed, that supporters of Rose, were committed to occupying the area, until he was released. Hurst also said, that the executive of the party, which was scheduled to meet on Friday afternoons, would have relocated their meeting site, to the adjacent piece of land on American Road, which was being used, to stockpile sand for sale to consumers. By early evening, Hurst had also confirmed that a portable toilet and sleeping bags was ordered and that vendors were converging on the site for ongoing trade. By about 12:30 am Saturday morning, about two scores on party faithful were noted to be on the site. Although it was anticipated that the suspect could be detained in police custody beyond the weekend, Hurst was also quick to confirm, that they were contemplating inviting some religious priests on suite, to usher in and help celebrate Palm Sunday. Rose was being questioned about certain matters relating to his tenure at ABS. Meanwhile, there was no show of support outside of the St. John’s Police Station, for Bowers nor Reis. ><> The Carnival Development Committee (CDC) has published a registration deadline for all participating areas. In a press release, the CDC stated that by stepping up preparations for the 2006 festival, they were at the junction of accepting registration for various disciplines.
