A Beginning Not An End

Fellow Constituents. Today I am suspending my candidacy to become your representative in the Parliament of Antigua & Barbuda, but our campaign for change is not over.

I wish to thank each and every one of you who has supported this campaign. Since last year you have reached out to family, friends and neighbors, building one of the finest grassroots campaign Antigua & Barbuda has ever known. (But ignored by the press) I will never forget the work, and the heart and the courage that you put into our campaign. In the coming days we will be supporting a new initiative to continue the campaign for change you helped begin.

In the spirit of my motto “service before self” we must learn to identify and embrace causes greater than ourselves, and we must learn to subordinate our personal ambitions for the good of the people we serve.

This nation cannot afford 5 more years of a Lester Bird regime. Right now everything we have worked for is at stake. Right now everything we have fought for, and everything we believe in comes down to these last 20 days.

In that regard I am today endorsing the Hon. Baldwin Spencer to be the next Prime Minister of Antigua & Barbuda, and I am asking all my supporters to join the movement for change.

We need to stay focused that we the people can win; we need to stay focused that Antigua & Barbuda can win, by removing the corrupt, diseased Lester Bird millstone from around our necks. We cannot become distracted, because these are the most critical days our country has ever faced.

The Prime minister thought he was omnipotent, until the “Long Lane Declaration” forced him to his knees. Now more than ever we must confound the doubters, the critics and the cynics, and ensure that the peoples agenda for change becomes a reality.

If you have never heard urgency in my voice before, hear it now! We cannot waste another minute. The poor people of this State have been under relentless attack from Lester Bird and his ALP parasites for the last 10 years. We have only survived and gotten to where we are today, because of our courage, our perseverance, and our faith in God.

Today we will make history. The history is that thousands of us are coming together in common purpose to reclaim our values and our principles, to remove a regime that misled us, pillaged the treasury, corrupted our citizens, prostituted our politicians, defiled our young girls, and mortgaged our future with a national debt, strung on the backs of our children and grandchildren.

Your activism in this struggle, offers Antigua & Barbuda new hope. You are breathing fresh air into the lungs of our democracy; you are revitalizing grassroots politics. The numerous volunteers, and the large enthusiastic crowds at the UPP rallies demonstrates that more and more Antiguans and Barbudans are awakening to the fact that we don’t have to have 5 more years of Lester Bird and his cronies.

In the past, politics for some has been a spectator sport, for many, political campaigns meant sitting at home passively being manipulated by attack ads half-truths and propaganda on the State controlled ABS Radio and TV. Today, this campaign, the peoples campaign, engages active participation – not from those who want special favors later, but from those who dream of building a better Antigua and Barbuda.
