An official of the Canadian Cricket Association, is predicting a possible win for the West Indies, in the 2007 Cricket World Cup tournament. ><> ‘The Game of Love and Unity’ Truck Tour took place in Antigua yesterday. ><> Sir Vivian Richards was in action yesterday, as he captained a West Indies eleven, in a match, to commemorate the handing over of the 3W Stadium in Barbados. ><>

Saturday February 17, 2007: The regional Truck Tour featuring the official tournament song for ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 ‘The Game of Love and Unity’ was due to make a stop in Antigua today. The tour was scheduled to start at the Public Market in St. John’s and end at the official Ticket Centre, at the corner of Long Street and Independence Drive. The local organisers have revealed that a celebrity guest will be on hand at the event. ‘The Game of Love and Unity’, the official tournament song for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007, was launched in December 2006 and features International and Caribbean stars Rupee, Shaggy and Fay Ann Lyons. ><>

Thursday February 15, 2007: The ground staffs at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds are in protest mode. The workers downed tools yesterday, after management had ran out of time, to meet certain salary obligations. Reports are that the ground contractor and landscaper George Purcel, was operating on a stingy float, as a result of not been paid by the authorities for months. His plight however, had affected his ability to pay salaries and as a result, the workers took action to show their disgust. According to the minister responsible for the stadium activity, John Maginley, the delay was caused, after the treasury had not approved the vouchers. He did not give reasons as to why that was so, but stated that his ministry was in touch with the Ministry of Finance, to see how best that the disbursements could be made and ultimately, to also see how best the project could be speeded up in the final stages. The amount of monies owed to Purcel, have not been disclosed. ><> Walker says “no” to persons entering the country on the “single Cricket World Cup Space”, but would still want to extend their stay in the country. ><>

Wednesday February 14, 2007: The handing over ceremony of the new Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium, have positively impacted on ticket sales at the venue, for matches to be played during the 2007 Cricket World Cup (CWC). So said an official attached to the Local Organising Committee, that would be in charge of the event. According to Martin Cave, the Cricket Operations Manager, at World Cup Antigua Inc. yesterday, “sales have increased, since fans have had an opportunity to visit the venue and experience for themselves its special ambiance.” Cave added, that fans are now talking about where they would like to sit: “It really gave them a different perspective of how the stadium will look and feel on match days,” continued Cave. Cave also revealed, the steady pace of sales in the Phase 3 Public Ticketing exercise, which started two weeks ago. “Although, there are tickets available for most of our matches, we have seen significant sales for matches involving the Indian team, however, our fans just want to be a part of the occasion,” he added. But fans of the game were noted to be getting a better choice, in another revelation, that ticket purchases the Official Ticket Centre, will be extending their opening hours to six days a week. Fans purchasing tickets at the Official Ticket Centre will be given a free poster. ><> Two former Antigua & Barbuda test cricketers, will be honoured among two former victorious West Indies cricket teams. Named are Sir Vivian Richards and Andy Roberts. Richards and Roberts were among the 1975 and 1979 teams respectively, which won the first two ICC Cricket World Cups. A brief ceremony, prior towards the 2007 West Indies clash against Pakistan at Sabina Park in Jamaica, was earmarked to herald the achievements, of the players, who were led to victory by Clive Lloyd in the inaugural event and who repeated as champions four years later under the same captain. The surviving 18 members of the two squads will be hosted at the March 13 match by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the ICC Cricket World Cup West Indies 2007 Inc. and will be presented with various memorabilia to mark the celebration. Presentations will also be made later in the tournament to the families of three deceased players – Keith Boyce, Roy Fredericks and Malcolm Marshall, as well as to the family of the late Sir Clyde Walcott, who had emerged as the manager/coach of both teams. The special announcement was made by Chris Dehring, the ICC CWC 2007 Managing Director & CEO on Monday evening, at the annual West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) awards and dinner in Barbados. Dehring also named them at the teams from the glory days According to Dehring, “We will be entertaining them and presenting them with that famous trophy – the Prudential Cup – on Caribbean soil. It will be great and we look forward to having them with us on such an historic occasion,” he told players and invited guests. Elaborating on the initiative, CWC Corporate Communications Director, Marvia Roach, said that the West Indies icons would receive “significant acknowledgement” of their accomplishments, which 30 years ago, had signalled the beginning of the team’s dominance in international cricket. “West Indies cricket owes a priceless debt of gratitude to these gentlemen. Their heroics are a major part of the reason that the Caribbean is now on the threshold of hosting the Cricket World Cup and, having been the first to win the Event, they should rightly be recognised at the start of the 2007 tournament,” she noted. Roach also confirmed, that there will be a number of mementos for the ex-cricketers, including a special-edition tie and replica West Indies team shirts for ICC CWC 2007. The latter will be a one-off brand, which the current West Indies team will only wear during the tournament. “WICB and CWC are also finalising certain surprise plans to salute the 1975 and 1979 victories by these West Indies players,” she added. Richards was adjudged ‘Man of the Match’, in the 1979 game. ><>

History of the ICC World Cup Cricket

The ICC Cricket World Cup is the world championship of one-day cricket, a tournament held quadrenially between all Test-playing nations (currently 10 nations), plus qualifiers.

The Cricket World Cup was first held in 1975 in England, with eight teams participating: Australia, England, the West Indies, Pakistan, India, and New Zealand (the six Test nations at the time), with Sri Lanka and a composite team from East Africa. The first three tournaments were held in England.

N. K. P. Salve, the President of the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) recounts the awarding of hosting rights for the 1987 World Cup in his book “The Story of the Reliance Cup”. According to Salve, he was given two tickets for the 1983 World Cup final at Lord's. When India unexpectedly qualified for the final, he requested two additional tickets from the MCC for friends who had just arrived from India. The MCC refused his request. Following this rebuff, Salve campaigned heavily amongst associate members of the International Cricket Council to form a bloc of voters, who ultimately awarded the hosting of the 1987 World Cup jointly to India and Pakistan.

Since 1987, the hosting of the World Cup have been shared by the major cricket playing regions of the world - England, the Indian subcontinent, Australasia, Southern Africa and now the West Indies in 2007. The tournaments have been based mainly in the local superpowers, though matches are held in all regional cricketing nations.

The World Cup is held in high esteem amongst fans, players, and administrators, unlike many of the myriad of one-day tournaments held around the world each year. It has been the scene of some of the major developments in the way one-day cricket is played. The next tournament will be held in the West Indies in 2007 and will consist of 16 teams.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has given India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh the go ahead to proceed with their bid to the 2011 World Cup.
